Anglian Flight Centres: earls colne airfield EGSR

About the airfield

Earls Colne originates from the early 1940's, and was purpose built as a bomber base for the second world war. Opening in August 1942, it was home to the USAAF, and operated (amongst others) Martin B-26 Marauders.

In September 1944, control was returned to the RAF with Halifaxes flying out of the field.

In 1955, the airfield was put up for public auction. An investment company bought most of the land, returning it to agriculture, whilst various firms moved into the buildings.

The control tower was used as a house until 2003 when it was demolished.

Today, Earls Colne airfield is home to the Essex Golf and Country Club, an industrial estate, and, of course, Anglian Flight Centres who still operate from the location of one of the old runways (originally 07/25).
